Cyprus is an island country located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. It is the third largest and third most populous island in the Mediterranean, after Sicily and Sardinia. Cyprus is located south of Turkey, west of Syria and Lebanon, northwest of Israel, north of Egypt and southeast of Greece. The island has an area of 9,251 square kilometers and a population of 1,208,000 people.
The capital and largest city is Nicosia. Other major cities include Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos. The island has a developed economy based on tourism, agriculture, manufacturing and service industries. Tourism is a significant contributor to the economy, accounting for about 10% of GDP. Cyprus is a member of the European Union, the Commonwealth of Nations and the United Nations.
The island was first inhabited by humans in the Neolithic period. It has been ruled by several major civilizations over the centuries, including the Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Franks and Venetians. Cyprus was annexed by the Ottoman Empire in 1571. The island remained a British colony until 1960, when it gained independence as the Republic of Cyprus.
The Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 led to the occupation of the northern part of the island by Turkey and the displacement of thousands of Cypriots. The UN-brokered Cyprus peace talks have been ongoing since 1968 but have so far failed to reach a settlement. Cyprus is a divided island, with the northern part under Turkish control and the southern part under Greek control.
The island has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The average temperature in summer is 29 degrees Celsius and in winter is 14 degrees Celsius. Cyprus experiences very little rainfall, averaging only about 400 mm per year.
Cyprus is home to a number of bird species, including the Cyprus warbler, Audouin’s gull and the flamingo. The island also has a number of endemic plant species, such as the Cyprus cyclamen and the wild olive tree.
